Assignment 3: Attend a Group Event Copy

Attend a Group Event

Find a group event you will attend. This could be a seminar, or speaking event event at your school or place of employment, industry networking event, etc. Plan on using and practicing your personal branding statement and your conversation-starting question. We challenge you to talk to 3 people you do not know and come away with something you discovered about this person. Bonus if you come away with their contact information!

Group events:

  • Bring a friend (if  possible)  and act relaxed
  • Be prepared and arrive early
  • Know your personal branding statement
  • Have conversation-starting questions, open-ended.
  • At larger events, if possible get a copy of the list of attendees and research on LinkedIn.
  • Have a conversation exit strategy if it seems as though a conversation is dwindling down such as “It was nice meeting you and I look forward to our next conversation. I am sure there are other people here that you are interested in meeting, I will follow up with you.” Find your own transition statement which doesn’t offend the person or people you are speaking with.
  • If you want to continue deepening the relationship after the event, ask for their contact information and a request to follow-up on a specific topic. Then remember to follow-up!!   Enter this new connection into PRSIM and remember to set a follow up.

Remember whether you are a student coming out of college or someone with years of experience you have value. First, get a handle on the value you can bring. You have your skills, your network, and your genuine interest to find a way to bring value to the people you meet. You never know the ways you may be able to help someone.

*Please note PRISM offers a lesson strictly on the informational interview.
