Watch video presentation: Using Mentoring to Improve Yourself and Help Others
We have included highlights of Mentoring below if you want to reflect on the how to’s. We recommend completing the SMART Goals Worksheet so you can have a better understanding as to what your goals are in having a mentor. Once you have completed your SMART Goals, we suggest completing the PRISM Mentee Preparation Worksheet, which is linked in the materials tab.
Benefits to a successful mentorship include:
A mentor benefits in:
- Serving others as a way to give back
- Building skills in leadership, coaching/counseling, listening, and modeling.
A mentee benefits from:
- Assistance in defining career goals and strategies
- Increasing professional connections and networking
- Build self-advocacy skills and confidence.
Some main benefits to both are:
- Each will gain experience, insights, and new perspectives
- Will have built a new or deeper relationship.
Key components for successful mentorship are:
- Clear Objectives and Goals – The parties need to agree on the purpose of the relationship. Define what you desire to accomplish, your plan, and what you hope to get out of the mentorship.
- Framework or structure you will follow – It is important to outline the time commitment. Set a schedule for when, how long, and how often you will be meeting.
- Measured outcome – You will want a measurable outcome so both parties can confirm the value derived from this mentorship.
